Marcos Ambrose continues to show he’s a threat to win his first career NASCAR Sprint Cup race. Ambrose recorded the fastest time in the first of two Cup practices on Saturday at Watkins Glen International in preparation for Sunday’s race. Driving for JTG Daugherty Racing, Ambrose put down a lap of 122.643 mph, ahead of Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr. (122.379).

Marcos AmbrosePolesitter Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports) was third, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing) and Germain Racing’s Max Papis. Red Bull Racing’s Brian Vickers was sixth-fastest despite a spin off of Turn 1. He drove away with no damage, as did Hall of Fame Racing’s Bobby Labonte.

Casey Mears (Richard Childress Racing), AJ Allmendinger (Richard Petty Motorsports), Martin Truex Jr. (EGR) and Jeff Burton (RCR) rounded out the top 10.

Road-course expert Boris Said had the biggest incident of practice when he slid off the track into the gravel trap. His car had to be extricated. The final Cup practice is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. EDT, with Sunday’s race scheduled to begin shortly after 2 p.m.
